How Long Do Gutters Last? Condition, Not Age
We are not publishing a lifespan figure for gutters, and that is the finding, not an omission. Every source we could find that puts a number of years on a gutter system is a company that sells gutter replacement, and those sources disagree with each other on the same material. There is no government, extension-service, trade-association or manufacturer specification we could locate to check them against. What we can tell you instead is the thing that actually decides when gutters get replaced: their condition, not their age. Most gutters come down because the fascia behind them softened, a joint opened, or the fall was lost — not because a clock ran out.
Why there is no number on this page
The search for a sourced service life ran twice and failed the same way both times. The pattern is worth stating plainly, because it tells you something about every other page that does give you a number.
Search for how long gutters last and you get gutter contractors, gutter installers and replacement-lead sites. Each is describing a product they are paid to replace. That is not automatically wrong — an installer genuinely does see more failed gutters than anyone — but it is an interested party, and the interest runs in one direction. A shorter quoted life sells more work.
The second problem is that they do not agree with each other. For a single common material the claims we found ranged across a spread wide enough that picking any point inside it would have been our choice rather than the source’s. Averaging interested estimates does not produce a disinterested one.

A page that shows you four gaps is less satisfying than one that shows you four numbers. It is also the honest state of the evidence, and you would be taking those numbers into a decision about spending thousands of dollars.
What would close this gap
We are not stuck on this permanently. Any one of the following would let us publish a figure, and if you can point us at one, tell us:
- A manufacturer’s written warranty stating a term for finish, perforation or structural failure. A warranty is a commercial promise rather than an engineering estimate, but it is a dated, named commitment from the party who made the product, and it can be quoted exactly.
- A building-science or agricultural-extension publication on exterior metalwork service life. These exist for roofing and cladding.
- An insurer or loss-adjuster depreciation schedule. Insurers publish useful life tables for building components because they have to settle claims on them, and they have no incentive to shorten the figure.
- A materials-engineering source on atmospheric corrosion rates for aluminum, galvanised steel and copper, which would let a figure be derived rather than asserted — and we would show the derivation.
What we will not do is take the midpoint of five contractor blogs and present it as a fact.
The ordering, which we are confident about
Durations are not sourceable here. The ordering is, in the sense that every source we looked at agrees on it and the underlying metallurgy explains why. Use it for choosing between materials, not for predicting a date.
Vinyl is the shortest-lived. It is a polymer sitting in direct sun. UV exposure makes it brittle over time, and brittle plastic cracks at the fastener holes and at the joints rather than bending. Cold makes this worse, so vinyl does least well in exactly the climates where ice loading is heaviest.
Galvanised steel sits in the middle and fails from the inside. The zinc coating protects the steel until it is breached, and it is breached first where water sits longest: the seams, the fastener penetrations, and any cut end. A steel gutter that looks sound from the ground can be rusting along its base under standing debris.
Aluminum does not rust, but it dents and chalks. There is no iron in it to oxidise into rust, so its failure modes are physical rather than chemical — ladder damage, ice deformation, and hangers tearing out of the fascia. The painted finish chalks and fades long before the metal itself is compromised, which is why painting gutters is often the real question rather than replacing them.
Copper outlasts all of it by a wide margin. It patinates to a stable surface oxide that protects the metal underneath rather than consuming it. Copper gutter usually comes off a building during other work, not because it failed.
Note what that ordering is not: it is not a licence to infer numbers. Knowing copper lasts considerably longer than vinyl does not tell you whether your own aluminum gutters have five years left or twenty.
What actually ends a gutter system
In practice five things take gutters off a house, and only one of them is the gutter wearing out.
1. The fascia behind it, not the gutter itself
Hangers screw into fascia board. If water has been getting behind the gutter — because there is no gutter apron or drip edge, or because the gutter overflowed repeatedly — the board softens, screws lose their grip, and the gutter starts to sag or pull away. The aluminum may be perfect. The job is carpentry, and it is the most expensive thing on this page.
2. Joints, seams and corners
Gutters leak at joints, essentially always. Sectional gutter has a joint every ten feet; seamless gutter has joints only at the corners and end caps, which is the entire argument for it and the reason seamless costs more. Sealant is a consumable — it has a service life of its own, and resealing a corner is maintenance rather than failure.
3. Lost fall
Gutter is hung with a deliberate slope towards the outlets. Hangers relax, ice loads pull sections down, and a length that no longer drains holds standing water. Standing water accelerates corrosion in steel, grows the biofilm that holds debris in place, and adds weight that pulls the run down further. This is often fixable by rehanging rather than replacing.
4. Physical damage
Ladders dent gutter. Ice expands in it. Branches fall on it. A dented section can usually be replaced on its own, which is worth knowing before accepting a quote for a whole elevation.
5. Fastener corrosion, including galvanic pairing
Steel screws in an aluminum gutter, with water present, form a galvanic couple: the less noble metal corrodes preferentially. The fasteners are the cheapest part of the system and among the first to go. Replacing them is trivial; ignoring them until the gutter tears loose is not.
How to tell whether yours are finished
Stand back and look during heavy rain. Then look closely from a ladder in dry weather. What you are checking for:
- Water overshooting the front edge in ordinary rain. Usually a blockage or too few downspouts rather than a worn-out gutter — see gutter downspouts for the spacing rule.
- Standing water in the run a day after rain. Fall has been lost.
- Daylight at a seam, or staining down the fascia below one. An open joint.
- Sponginess in the fascia board when pressed, or screws that turn without tightening. This is the one that pushes a job from repair to replacement.
- Rust through the base of a steel gutter, rather than surface rust on the face. Surface rust is cosmetic; perforation is not.
- Cracks radiating from fastener holes in vinyl. Vinyl does not bend back.
- Sections pulled away from the fascia at one end, which is almost always hangers, ice, or both.
None of these is about age. A twelve-year-old gutter on rotten fascia is finished; a thirty-year-old one on sound fascia with a resealed corner is not.
Repair or replace
That checklist splits into two piles, and the split is more useful to you than a lifespan would be.
Repair covers sagging sections, open seams, lost fall, a damaged length, and corroded fasteners. These are localised, and the parts themselves are cheap — rain gutter repair costs sets out what each failure mode actually involves.
Replace when the fascia has gone soft along a run, when a steel system is perforating in more than one place, or when you are re-roofing anyway and the access is already paid for. How much it costs to replace gutters covers the cost of that decision.
The genuinely marginal case is a sound but tired aluminum system: it works, it looks poor, and the honest options are painting it or living with it rather than replacing it.
Why we cannot give you a cost per year
The obvious next question is whether a more expensive material pays for itself over time. That calculation needs two inputs, an installed cost and a service life, and we have sourced figures for the first but not the second. Multiplying a real price by an invented lifespan would produce a confident-looking number built on the weakest thing on the page.
So we are not doing it. When a lifespan source exists that we would stand behind, that arithmetic goes here with the working shown so you can redo it. Until then, gutter cost per foot gives you the installed side and you will have to supply your own view of the other half.
Common questions
How long do aluminum gutters last?
We do not have a figure we would stand behind, for the reason set out at the top of this page. What determines it in practice is whether water gets behind the gutter onto the fascia, whether the run holds standing water, and whether the fasteners are corroding. Aluminum does not rust, so the metal itself is rarely the thing that fails first.
Do gutter guards make gutters last longer?
Plausibly, by keeping standing debris and the water it holds out of the channel — but we have not found that tested, and the parties making the claim sell guards. What is better documented is that guards reduce cleaning frequency without eliminating it, which is covered on are gutter guards worth it.
Should I replace gutters when I replace the roof?
Often yes, on access grounds rather than condition. Ladders, scaffolding and crew time are already on site, and the drip edge that protects the fascia is fitted as part of the roof. If the gutters are near the end of their useful condition, that is the cheapest moment to change them. If they are sound, roofing over them and keeping them is perfectly legitimate.
Does seamless gutter last longer than sectional?
It has fewer joints, and joints are where gutters leak, so the argument is a good one on mechanism. We have no sourced comparison of actual service lives, so treat it as a reason to prefer seamless rather than as a measured difference.
How often should gutters be replaced?
That is the same question phrased as a schedule, and it has the same answer: there is no schedule. Inspect twice a year as part of routine gutter maintenance, act on the checklist above, and let condition drive the decision.
