Aluminum gutter material runs $2.90 to $4.52 per linear foot at trade prices (Gutter Supply, retrieved September 2026), and installation labour adds about $5.00 per linear foot (This Old House, August 2026). On a typical 40 × 30 ft house — 140 feet of gutter — that works out at roughly $1,160 to $1,730 once downspouts and corner mitres are included. The calculator below itemises it, because the breakdown is the part you can actually check against a quote. One important caveat before you use it, covered underneath: this is a cost build-up, not a quoted price.

Read this before you compare it to a quote
The number above will usually be lower than a contractor’s quote, and that is not because the quote is inflated. It is because they are different things.
This calculator prices materials at trade rates plus published installation labour. A contractor’s quote also carries overhead, insurance, vehicles, equipment, and profit — and it typically marks up the materials rather than passing them through at cost. Published survey figures for a complete installed job therefore sit higher than a build-up like this one.
Use the itemisation for what it is good for: seeing whether the shape of a quote makes sense. If a quote is triple this figure, the gap is worth asking about. If it is somewhat higher, that is the normal difference between cost and price.
What is included, and what is not
Included: gutter material, installation labour, downspouts (count derived from spacing), and corner mitres.
Not included, and deliberately not estimated:
- Removal and disposal of old gutters, if there are any. Not a line we can add, because it is not a line contractors quote: a replacement package normally covers disposal alongside the installation. It is real work and it is part of why a quote sits above this build-up — it is just not itemised. Ask in writing what a quote includes.
- Regional variation. Every figure here is national. State-level labour data comes from a US Bureau of Labor Statistics file that refuses automated download, so until somebody retrieves it by hand, a regional multiplier would be invented rather than sourced.
- A height or storey adjustment. The calculator records your storeys but does not apply a multiplier, because no sourced multiplier exists. Two-storey work genuinely costs more; we cannot yet tell you how much more.
- Hangers, elbows, end caps and splash blocks. These are sourced per unit but need a per-foot spacing to convert, which is not sourced. Budget for them separately.
- Fascia repair. If the boards behind the gutter are soft, that is carpentry and it is priced separately.
Anywhere a figure is missing, that is a gap we have not filled rather than one we have not noticed.
What drives the price
Material choice. Aluminum is the default and the cheapest metal worth having. Copper and zinc are multiples of it. The calculator prices aluminum only, and the others show as unavailable rather than being substituted with the aluminum price — see the question below for why that now applies to copper for a different reason than to the rest.
Gauge. The .027 to .032 spread is most of the range above. Thicker gutter resists ladder dents and ice loading and costs a little more per foot. On a house with heavy winters it is the cheaper choice over the life of the system.
Seamless versus sectional. Seamless is roll-formed on site from coil, so there are no joints along the run to leak — the usual failure point. Sectional is what you buy off a shelf in ten-foot lengths. Most professional installs are seamless; most DIY is sectional.
Corners. Each internal and external corner is a mitre, a joint, and a labour step. A complex roofline with eight corners costs meaningfully more than a simple rectangle with four, which is why the calculator asks.
Access and height. Two storeys, steep ground under the run, or a conservatory in the way all add time. Real, and not yet quantified here.
Condition of what is behind the gutter. Hangers screw into fascia. If the fascia is soft, it gets replaced first.
Common questions
How many linear feet of gutter does my house need?
Roughly the perimeter of the footprint, which is what the calculator derives: 2 × (length + width). It is an approximation — gutters run along eaves rather than all four sides on many rooflines — so measure and override the field if you want precision. This Old House puts most homes at 125 to 200 feet.
How many downspouts will I need?
One per 20 to 25 feet of gutter (This Old House, August 2026). On 140 feet that is six to seven. Too few is the most common design fault: the gutter fills faster than the outlets can drain it and overflows in heavy rain even though nothing is blocked.
Why does the estimate show a range rather than one number?
Because the sources give ranges, and collapsing them into a single figure would be inventing precision we do not have. The low end is the cheapest verified material at the widest downspout spacing; the high end is the dearest at the tightest.
Is this cheaper than replacing gutters?
Installation and replacement are close, with one difference: replacement usually involves taking the old system down and disposing of it, which is the line we cannot yet price.
Can I use this for vinyl or copper?
No, and the reasons differ.
For vinyl, zinc and galvanised steel we have no verified trade material price at all, and scaling the aluminum figure by a ratio we made up is exactly what this site does not do.
Copper is different: we sourced a verified trade price for it in September 2026, and the calculator still will not use it. That figure is the supplier’s stated starting price rather than a range, and a calculator that multiplies a floor by your footage returns a total that is wrong in one direction every single time — while looking exactly as confident as the aluminum result. The figure itself is published on gutter cost per foot and compared against aluminum on aluminum vs copper gutters, where it can be labelled for what it is.
