Aluminum Gutters vs Copper: What the Price Gap Buys
Copper gutter starts at about $13.79 per linear foot as bare trade material. Aluminum is $2.90 to $4.52 (Gutter Supply, September 2026) — so copper begins at roughly three to five times the price of the metal it replaces, before anyone has hung anything. On a 140-foot house that is a difference of close to $1,300 in material alone.
That multiple is the decision. Everything else on this page is about whether it buys you anything, and it does buy some things — just not always the ones people think.
The price gap, from one supplier’s own list
Both figures below come from the same trade supplier, on the same day, in the same channel. That matters more than it sounds: most published aluminum-versus-copper comparisons set one publisher’s aluminum number against another’s copper number, often from different channels, and the resulting multiple is partly an artefact of the comparison.

The supplier's starting price, for the cheapest copper K-style configuration it stocks. Heavier copper, larger profiles and shorter runs all cost more, so treat this as the bottom of what copper costs rather than what it will cost you. Trade channel, material only.

Read the copper figure carefully. It is the supplier’s starting price, for the cheapest copper configuration it stocks — the lightest weight in the smallest profile. Heavier copper and larger profiles cost more, and the listing does not publish a per-foot ceiling. So the comparison below is copper at its best against aluminum across its whole range, which is the most generous framing copper can get.
Over a 140-foot run, that bare material works out at — our arithmetic on those two published figures:

Copper costs at least $1,297.80 more in metal, comparing its floor against aluminum’s ceiling. Against aluminum’s floor the gap is $1,524.60. Neither is rounded up to a tidier number, because rounding a difference upward is the easiest way to make a gap look bigger than it is.
Why the installed gap is bigger than the material gap
Here is where most comparisons quietly go wrong, and where we are going to stop short of giving you a number.

An average rather than a range, for seamless installation. One caveat, found on 16 September 2026: this figure cannot be reconciled with the vinyl row of the same publisher's per-material table, which puts vinyl installed at less than this labour rate alone. It reconciles with that table's aluminum, steel and copper rows, so the vinyl row looks like the broken one rather than this figure.

That figure is for hanging seamless aluminum, and applying it to copper would understate copper. Copper is not the same job:
Gutter lap joint specification
Gutter joints are lapped one inch, riveted, and soldered where the metal can be soldered; where it cannot, a compatible sealant is applied continuously within the lapjoint specification
Copper and steel solder; aluminum does not. That single line is why a copper gutter is different work rather than the same work in a dearer metal.

Copper solders. Aluminum does not — its joints get a continuous sealant inside a lapped, riveted joint instead. Soldering a gutter joint is slower, needs a different skill, and needs someone on site who has it. On top of that, copper is usually installed sectional rather than roll-formed seamless on site, so there are more joints to make in the first place.
More joints, each one a soldering operation, done by a scarcer trade. All three push the labour line up, and we have no sourced figure for how far.

So this page publishes a material comparison and refuses an installed one. A copper installed total built by adding an aluminum labour rate to a copper material price would look like a calculation and be a guess. If you want an installed figure, the only reliable route is three written quotes — and given the labour is where the uncertainty is, that is worth doing properly here more than on an aluminum job.

Every lifespan figure we could find for either metal comes from somebody who sells gutter replacement, and they disagree with each other by decades on the same material. The full account of why is on how long gutters last.
What can be said without a figure: copper’s corrosion behaviour is genuinely different in kind, not just in degree. It forms a patina — a stable surface oxide that protects the metal beneath rather than consuming it — whereas aluminum’s protection is a thin coating that, once breached, does not repair itself in the same way. That is a real material advantage. How many years it is worth on your house, nobody we would cite has said.
Appearance
This is the reason most copper gutter actually gets bought, and there is nothing wrong with that. New copper is bright; over a few years it darkens to brown and eventually, in the right climate, to green. It is a visible, deliberate architectural choice on a period house in a way aluminum never is.
If appearance is the reason, price it as an appearance decision rather than as an investment that pays back — because the payback case rests on a lifespan figure nobody has published credibly.
What it does not buy
It does not carry more water. Capacity is set by the profile and the size, not the metal. A 5-inch copper K-style and a 5-inch aluminum K-style hold the same. See gutter sizes.
It does not need less cleaning. Debris does not care what the trough is made of.
It is not more dent-resistant in every case. Copper is soft. Heavier gauges are stiffer, and a 16-ounce copper is not obviously tougher against a ladder than a .032 aluminum.
Installing copper: what is different
Four things change, and a contractor who has only ever hung aluminum will feel all of them.
Joints are soldered, per the specification above. That is the headline difference and the one that needs a specific skill.
It is usually sectional, not seamless. Aluminum gets roll-formed on site into continuous runs by a machine most installers own. Copper seamless machines exist and are far less common, so copper generally arrives in lengths and gets joined.
Hangers and fasteners have to be compatible. Copper in wet contact with aluminum or galvanised steel sets up a corrosion cell, and the other metal is the one that loses. Copper systems use copper or brass hangers, hidden hangers and fasteners for this reason. It is not an upsell.
What is downstream of it matters. Copper runoff carries a trace of dissolved copper, and that runoff landing on an aluminum or galvanised surface below attacks it. A copper gutter discharging onto a galvanised roof section, or into an aluminum downspout, is a mistake. We do not have a citable source putting numbers on the rate, so treat this as a compatibility rule rather than a measured risk: keep the whole water path in one metal family.
When copper is worth it, plainly
It is worth it if the house is a period or architect-designed property where the gutter is part of the elevation, you intend to stay long enough for appearance to matter to you rather than to a future buyer, and you have found an installer who solders copper routinely rather than one who will learn on your house.
It is not worth it if the case being made to you is payback. That argument needs a lifespan figure, and there is no credible published one — so an installer quoting you “copper lasts a hundred years, aluminum lasts twenty” is quoting numbers from the same unsourced pool we declined to publish.
It is a bad idea if the rest of your rainwater path is aluminum or galvanised steel and you are only changing the gutters.
Common questions
How much more is copper than aluminum?
At least three to five times, as bare material, from one supplier’s two prices. Installed, more than that, because copper’s joints are soldered and it is usually sectional — but we have no verified figure for how much more, and we are not going to construct one.
Can I get seamless copper gutters?
Yes, but the roll-forming machines are much less common than the aluminum ones, so your choice of installer narrows sharply and the premium over sectional copper varies by who is near you. Ask specifically; “seamless” on a quote does not always mean formed on site.
Will copper gutters stain my siding or brick?
Copper runoff can leave green-brown streaks on light masonry below a joint or a drip point, particularly in the first few years before the patina stabilises. It is a known effect and it is cosmetic. On dark brick it is usually invisible; on pale limestone or render it is not.
Is aluminum gutter good enough?
For almost every house, yes — which is why it is what almost every house has. It does not rust, it is light enough to hang on standard hangers, it takes paint (see can you paint gutters), and it is the profile the seamless machines are built around. The case for copper is not that aluminum fails.
What about half-round copper?
Copper is disproportionately sold as half-round, because the two choices are usually made together for the same reason — how it looks on a traditional house. That changes capacity as well as appearance; see K-style vs half-round gutters.
