K-Style vs Half-Round Gutters: Capacity, Debris and Cost
K-style is the default in the United States and half-round is the older, traditional profile. The short version: for the same nominal width, K-style carries more water, and half-round drains more completely and holds less debris. K-style is cheaper, more widely stocked and fits standard hangers. Half-round costs more and is usually chosen for how it looks on a period house — though its self-draining shape is a genuine functional advantage under heavy fine debris, not just an aesthetic one.
The profiles
K-style — sometimes called ogee — has a flat back that fastens directly to the fascia, a flat bottom, and a decorative front face whose curves happen to resemble crown moulding. It is a folded profile, which is why it can be roll-formed on site into seamless runs.
Half-round is exactly what it sounds like: a semicircular trough. It hangs from brackets rather than fastening flat to the fascia, which is part of why it is more work to install.
Capacity
For a given nominal size, K-style holds more.
A half-round gutter’s capacity is straightforward geometry. A 5-inch half-round is a semicircle of radius 2.5 inches, so its cross-section is:
π × 2.5² ÷ 2 ≈ 9.8 square inches
That is arithmetic you can check, not a manufacturer figure.
K-style’s cross-section is larger, because the profile is deeper and squarer — it uses the full width at the bottom rather than curving away from it. The exact area varies with the manufacturer’s fold pattern, so we are not going to publish a single number for it, but the direction is consistent across every profile drawing: a 5-inch K-style out-carries a 5-inch half-round.

Debris, and where half-round wins
This is the trade-off that rarely gets stated, and it runs the other way.
A K-style gutter has a flat bottom and an internal corner where the bottom meets the back. Water drains from it, but not completely — a film stays, and grit, shingle granules and organic silt settle into that corner and build up. Over years that sediment holds moisture against the metal and is the reason the bottom of a K-style is usually where corrosion starts.
A half-round has no flat and no internal corner. Water converges to a line at the base and carries debris with it, so the trough scours itself far better. Anything that does settle sits in a rounded channel rather than a square one and is easier to flush out.
Under heavy pine needle drop or in a region with ageing asphalt shingles shedding granules, that is a real maintenance difference and not a small one.
Cost, honestly
Half-round generally costs more per foot, for three reasons that compound: it uses more metal to achieve a given capacity, it is stocked by fewer suppliers, and it is disproportionately sold in copper, which is several times the price of aluminum in any profile.

Installation differences
Hangers. K-style fastens to the fascia with hidden hangers inside the trough. Half-round hangs in brackets, which are visible and are part of the look. Different hardware, different labour.
Seamless. K-style is the profile that gets roll-formed on site into seamless runs, which is most of the US market. Half-round seamless exists but the machines are far less common, so half-round is more often sectional — and joints are where gutters leak.
Downspout outlets. Half-round usually pairs with round downspouts, which are sized by diameter. Compare cross-sectional area rather than the headline number when matching them.
Which to choose
Choose K-style if you want maximum capacity per inch of width, the lowest cost, the widest choice of installers, and a seamless run. That is most houses, and it is the default for good reasons.
Choose half-round if the house is period and the profile matters visually, or if your debris load is fine and persistent and you would rather have a trough that scours itself — accepting that you will pay more and may need to size up to match the capacity you had.
Common questions
Is half-round better than K-style?
Neither is better outright. Half-round drains more cleanly; K-style carries more water for the same width and costs less. The right answer depends on whether your constraint is capacity, debris or appearance.
Can I put half-round on a modern house?
Nothing stops you, and some contemporary designs use it deliberately. It reads as traditional, so it is a visual decision more than a technical one.
Does half-round clog less?
It sheds better rather than blocking less at the outlet. Debris still reaches the downspout; it just does not sit in the trough building up a bed of silt.
Do I need bigger half-round to match my K-style?
Often, yes. If you are replacing like-for-like at the same nominal size you are accepting less capacity, and on a roof that already overflowed, that is the wrong direction.
