Gutter Downspouts: Sizing, Spacing and Drainage

A downspout is the vertical pipe that takes water out of the gutter and down to the ground, and the rule of thumb is one per 20 to 25 feet of guttering (This Old House, August 2026). Most overflow problems on a clean gutter are not blockages — they are too few downspouts, or downspouts too small for the roof above them. The gutter fills faster than the outlets can drain it and goes over the front edge in heavy rain, which looks exactly like a clog and is not one.

On a typical 140-foot gutter run that is six to seven downspouts. People are routinely surprised by that number, because a lot of houses have three or four.

Two things push you toward the tighter end of the spacing:

Roof area feeding the run. A long gutter collecting from a large roof plane needs more outlets than the same length collecting from a small one.

Rainfall intensity. What matters is not annual rainfall but how hard it rains in the worst hour. A region with sudden intense storms needs more drainage capacity than one with the same annual total delivered as drizzle.

Where a run cannot take another downspout for architectural reasons, the answer is usually a larger downspout rather than accepting the shortfall.

Sizing: 2x3 against 3x4

The two common rectangular sizes are 2 × 3 inches and 3 × 4 inches, and the difference is larger than it sounds.

  • 2 × 3 inches = 6 square inches of cross-section
  • 3 × 4 inches = 12 square inches of cross-section

That is exactly double the area, which is straightforward arithmetic you can check rather than a manufacturer claim. Real-world flow does not scale perfectly with area — friction against the pipe wall matters, and it penalises the smaller section — so in practice the larger downspout carries at least twice as much and clogs far less readily, because leaf debris that bridges a 2-inch throat passes a 3-inch one.

If your gutters overflow at the outlets during heavy rain while the trough itself is clear, undersized downspouts are the first thing to look at.

Round downspouts are sized by diameter and are common with half-round gutter. The same principle applies: compare cross-sectional area, not the headline dimension.

Where the water has to go

This is the part that gets skipped, and it undoes everything upstream.

A downspout discharging at the base of the wall has moved roof runoff from a line along the whole elevation into a concentrated jet at one point, which is arguably worse than no gutter at all. The water still ends up in the soil against the foundation — now all of it, in one place.

Get it clear of the building:

Extensions and splash blocks are the cheap answer. A splash block breaks the force and directs flow away; an extension carries it further. Further is better, and most extensions are too short.

Buried drain lines carry water to a discharge point well away from the house or into a dry well. Much tidier and much better, with one condition: they need a clean-out and they need fall. A buried line with no fall becomes a silt trap, and a buried line with no access is unclearable when it does.

Never into a foundation drain. Roof water is a large, sudden volume, and loading it into the perimeter drain that is supposed to be relieving groundwater pressure is how you overwhelm it.

The amount of water involved makes the case on its own: one inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is roughly 620 gallons — the arithmetic is worked through on are gutters necessary.

Elbows, offsets and fixings

Downspouts rarely run straight down. The eave overhangs the wall, so the top needs an offset — two elbows and a short length — to bring the pipe back to the wall before it drops.

Two practical points. Elbows should be assembled so the upper section sits inside the lower one, in the direction of flow — reversed, every joint leaks down the wall. And downspouts want strapping to the wall at least every six feet or so; a long unsupported run flexes in wind and works its fixings loose.

The failures worth knowing

Too few outlets. Covered above, and the most common by a distance.

Undersized section. 2 × 3 on a large roof plane.

Discharging at the wall. Solves the gutter problem, creates a foundation problem.

The outlet, not the gutter, is blocked. Debris fine enough to pass a guard still reaches the downspout and accumulates at the top elbow. A gutter that is clean but overflowing at one specific point is usually a blocked outlet.

Buried line silted up. No clean-out, no fall, no way to tell until it backs up into the gutter.

Common questions

How far from the house should a downspout discharge?

Further than most people manage. The goal is past the backfill zone — the disturbed, looser soil immediately around the foundation — so water is not simply soaking straight back down the outside of the wall.

Can I have too many downspouts?

Not functionally. The constraints are cost and appearance, not drainage.

Do gutter guards stop downspouts clogging?

They reduce it substantially but do not end it, because anything fine enough to pass the guard still arrives at the outlet. See gutter guard maintenance.

Should downspouts go at corners?

Usually, because that is where they are least visible and where the run naturally ends. What matters is spacing and capacity; corners are a convention, not a rule.

Why does mine overflow at the top of the downspout?

Either the outlet is blocked, or the downspout is too small for the water arriving. If the gutter is clean, suspect the second.
