Privacy Policy

This policy explains what homecostbook collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to describe what the site actually does today rather than everything it might do later, so some sections below say plainly that a thing is not in use yet.

Status of this document. This is a structural draft prepared by the site operator, following the standard sections a privacy policy is expected to cover and Google’s published disclosure requirements for sites that carry its advertising. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer. It should be before this site carries advertising, runs analytics, or accepts any personal data. If you are relying on this page for anything consequential, that caveat is the most important sentence on it.

The short version

As of the date above, homecostbook is a static website. It has no advertising, no analytics, no tracking scripts, no affiliate links, no forms, no accounts and no cookies set by us. There is nothing to log into and nothing to fill in. We do not build a profile of you, and we could not, because we do not collect anything with which to build one.

The one thing that does happen is unavoidable for any website: our hosting provider handles the request your browser makes, and that request contains technical information. That is described below.

Who we are

homecostbook is run by one person, Suchetan S Sarkar. There is no company behind it. The site publishes gutter cost research for a US audience and is operated from India, which is why both US and EU rules are addressed below.

What we collect

Information you give us

Only what you choose to send by email. If you write to us, we have your email address and whatever you put in the message, for as long as that message exists in the mailbox. We do not add it to any list, and there is no list to add it to.

The calculators on this site are a special case worth stating explicitly: everything you type into a calculator stays in your browser. The figures are computed on your own device. Nothing is submitted, stored or transmitted, and no result is ever gated behind giving us an email address.

Information collected automatically

When you request any page, our hosting provider (Cloudflare Pages) receives and may log standard technical information, including your IP address, the page requested, the time, your browser’s user-agent string, and referrer. This is ordinary server logging, it happens for every website you visit, and it is used to serve the site, keep it available and protect it from abuse. We do not use these logs to identify individuals, and we do not combine them with anything else.

Our host may also set cookies of its own for security and abuse prevention — for example to distinguish automated traffic from human visitors. These are set by the hosting provider rather than by us. Cloudflare publishes its own privacy documentation covering what it processes on behalf of sites it hosts.

Cookies set by this site

None. The site sets no cookies of its own. It also does not use localStorage, sessionStorage or any similar browser storage to track you between visits.

Analytics

Not in use. This site currently runs no analytics product of any kind — no Google Analytics, no cookieless alternative, nothing.

If that changes, this section will name the specific product, say whether it sets cookies, and say what it collects, before it goes live. Our stated intention is to choose a cookieless, aggregate-only analytics product if we adopt one at all, precisely so that this page can stay as short as it currently is.

Advertising

Not in use as of the date at the top of this page. homecostbook carries no advertising today.

We expect to apply to Google AdSense in future. The disclosures in this section are written now so that they are in place and accurate when that happens, and so you can see in advance what would change. None of this is happening yet.

When advertising is enabled:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings.
  • You may also opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info, or, in Europe, Your Online Choices.

We will not enable personalised advertising for visitors in the EEA or UK without a working consent mechanism in place first. See Cookie consent below, which is honest about the current state of that.

None on the site today. No page currently contains an affiliate link, and no affiliate cookie is set.

If we join an affiliate programme such as Amazon Associates in future, then clicking such a link may cause that programme to set a cookie identifying that you arrived from this site, so that any resulting purchase is attributed here. We would earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you.

Two commitments that go with that, which we would rather state before there is any money involved than after:

  • Any affiliate relationship will be disclosed next to the link itself, not only in a footer. That is US FTC law, not a courtesy.
  • An affiliate relationship will not decide what this site recommends. Our how we calculate costs page explains how figures and recommendations are arrived at, and we publish findings that are unhelpful to sellers routinely.

There is currently no cookie consent banner on this site, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. The site sets no cookies of its own, runs no analytics and serves no advertising, so there is no non-essential processing for you to consent to. A banner asking permission for something that is not happening would be theatre.

If and when advertising is introduced, a consent mechanism is required before personalised ads can be served to visitors in the EEA and UK, and it must be a properly certified one rather than a decorative banner. We will implement that before enabling ads, not after.

How we use what little we have

  • To deliver the site and keep it working.
  • To protect it against abuse and attack.
  • To answer you, if you email us.

We do not sell personal information. We do not share it with anyone except the service providers who make the site work — currently just our hosting provider — and where we are legally required to.

How long we keep it

Server logs are retained by our hosting provider according to their own retention schedule, which is short and measured in days rather than years. Email correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful to keep, and you can ask us to delete yours.

Your rights

Whoever and wherever you are, you can email us at support@homecostbook.com to ask what we hold about you, to ask for it to be corrected, or to ask for it to be deleted. In practice the answer for most visitors is that we hold nothing, because we collect nothing.

If you are in California (CCPA/CPRA)

California residents have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and for what purpose; to request deletion; to request correction; to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information; and not to be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA, and we do not collect the categories of information that would make such a sale possible. If advertising is enabled in future, that position will be re-stated on this page accurately at that time.

To exercise any of these rights, email us. We will respond within the period the law requires.

If you are in the EEA or UK (GDPR)

You have the right of access to your personal data; to rectification; to erasure; to restriction of processing; to data portability; and to object to processing. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time.

Our lawful basis for the limited processing described above is legitimate interests — specifically, operating and protecting a website you have asked to view. No processing on this site currently relies on consent, because no non-essential processing takes place.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. We would rather you told us first so we can fix it.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.

We link out to publishers, manufacturers, retailers and government sources, because citing a figure without linking to it is not citing it. Those sites have their own privacy policies and we do not control what they do. A link is not an endorsement of their data practices.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially — in particular if analytics, advertising or affiliate links are introduced — the change will be made before the thing it describes goes live, and the date at the top of this page will be updated. We do not backdate.
