Gutter Maintenance: A Season-by-Season Checklist
Clearing debris is the part everyone knows about. The jobs that actually decide how long a gutter system lasts are the other ones: checking the fall, the hangers, the seams, the outlets and the fascia behind it. A gutter that is perfectly clean but pitched wrong, or hanging off softened fascia, will fail just as surely — and those faults get worse quietly, which is why they end up costing more than the cleaning ever did.

The five things to check
Fall
Gutters are not level. They should drop roughly a quarter of an inch for every ten feet toward the outlet, so water moves rather than standing.
You can check it without instruments: after rain, look for standing water in the trough, or for a tide line of silt that stops partway along. Water sitting in a flat section is the single most common cause of corrosion from the inside, because the metal never dries.
Fall drifts over time as hangers loosen. It is correctable and rarely is.
Hangers
Hidden hangers clip inside the trough and screw into the fascia. They fail in two ways: the screw pulls out of softening timber, or the hanger itself fatigues and opens up.
Press up gently on the front lip of the gutter along the run. Anything that moves more than slightly, or drops when you let go, has a hanger problem.
Spacing is now something we can give you from manufacturers’ own specifications rather than as trade convention. Two of them, read directly: one specifies 24 inches on centre for normal conditions, and another states hangers must never exceed 36 inches on centre. Both reduce to 18 inches on centre where snow and wind are heavy — that is the one figure the two state identically, and ice loading rather than water is what sets it. A gutter full of ice weighs several times what the same gutter full of water does.
If your hangers are further apart than three feet, that is outside what either manufacturer specifies, whatever it has looked like for the last decade.
Seams and end caps
On sectional gutter, every joint is a potential leak, and sealant has a finite life — it goes brittle, shrinks back from the metal, and lets water through where you cannot see it.
Look at joints and end caps from underneath on a dry day. Staining, mineral deposits or a drip line on the ground below a joint means the seal has gone. Re-sealing is cheap; the fascia repair after two years of ignoring it is not.
Seamless runs have far fewer of these, which is most of their advantage.
Outlets and downspouts
The outlet is where debris fine enough to pass everything else accumulates. A gutter that is clean along its length but overflows at one specific point usually has a blocked outlet rather than a full trough.
Check that each downspout actually discharges during rain, that the strapping holding it to the wall is tight, and that the bottom elbow and any extension are still pointed away from the house — see gutter downspouts.
The fascia behind it
This is the one that turns a maintenance job into a carpentry job.
Water getting behind the gutter soaks the fascia board the hangers screw into. It is invisible while it happens. The symptoms are hangers that will not stay tight, peeling paint in a band along the top of the fascia, and dark staining behind the gutter. The fix for the cause is usually a gutter apron.
Season by season
Spring. Clear seed drop and pollen. Check fall and standing water while rain is frequent enough to show it. Inspect seams — winter movement is what opens them.
Summer. The quiet season, and the right time for the jobs that need dry weather: re-sealing joints, painting, tightening or replacing hangers. Sealant needs a dry, clean, above-freezing surface to bond, which summer reliably gives you and November does not.
Autumn. Clear after leaf fall has finished rather than during it. Check that every downspout runs freely before the weather turns, because a blockage you discover in January is a blockage you deal with in January.
Winter. Mostly observation. Watch where icicles form — off the front lip is normal, behind the gutter against the fascia is not. Do not chip at ice; you will damage the gutter far more reliably than you will clear it.
What to do about standing water
Standing water after rain has three likely causes, in order:
- A blocked outlet, holding water behind it. Clear it first — this is most cases.
- A sagged section, where a hanger has let go and the trough has dropped into a belly. Re-support it.
- Wrong fall from the start, which means re-hanging the run to pitch.
Diagnose in that order and you will usually stop at the first.
Sealant, briefly
Use a sealant made for gutters and compatible with your metal. The common mistake is silicone: it fails to bond well to aluminum, and once it is on, nothing else will stick to that surface afterwards either, which makes the proper repair harder than it needed to be.
Clean and dry the joint first. Sealant applied over silt is sealing the silt to the gutter.
When maintenance stops being worth it
Honest test. If you are re-sealing the same joints every year, if hangers will not hold because the fascia has gone, or if the trough is perforated by corrosion rather than dented, you are maintaining a system that has reached the end. At that point the money goes into replacement rather than another season of patching.
Perforation on the bottom of a K-style run is the classic signal — it is where silt holds moisture, so it corrodes from the inside and looks fine from below right up until it does not.
Common questions
How much fall should a gutter have?
About a quarter inch per ten feet toward the outlet is the conventional figure. The functional test is simpler: no standing water after rain.
How far apart should hangers be?
Every two to three feet is typical, and closer in regions with snow or ice loading, because a trough full of frozen debris is extremely heavy.
Can I re-pitch gutters myself?
Yes, in principle — it means loosening hangers along a run and re-setting the line. It is ladder work along the whole elevation and worth being realistic about before starting.
Do seamless gutters need less maintenance?
Less seam maintenance specifically, since there are no joints along the run. Everything else on this page — fall, hangers, outlets, fascia — applies equally.
Is it worth painting gutters as maintenance?
Cosmetic on aluminum, which already resists corrosion, and protective on steel. Either way the preparation is what decides whether it lasts — can you paint gutters covers it.
