Rain Gutter Repair Costs: Sagging, Leaks and Rot
Gutter repair parts are cheap — hangers at $2 to $17 each, elbows at $4 to $8, corner mitres from $7.79 (This Old House, June 2026; Gutter Supply, September 2026). Almost nothing that goes wrong with a gutter costs much to put right in materials. What you are paying for is somebody’s time on a ladder, and that rate is the one figure on this page we cannot publish, for a reason set out below that turns out to be a fact about how the trade quotes rather than a gap in our research. So this page is organised by what has actually failed, because the failure mode tells you whether you are looking at a part, an afternoon, or a replacement.
Start here: what has actually gone wrong
Find your symptom. Each one has a different answer, and price bands cannot tell them apart: an afternoon’s work and a job that turns into carpentry can both start as “the gutter is leaking”.
- Water spilling over the front edge in ordinary rain — a blockage or too few outlets. Usually the cheapest thing on this page.
- A section hanging lower than the rest, or pulling away — sagging. Hangers or fascia.
- Dripping at a joint, or staining on the fascia below one — a failed seal.
- A corner that has opened up — a separated mitre.
- Water behind the gutter, and soft board when pressed — fascia rot. This is the expensive one.
- Water pooling in the run a day after rain — lost fall.
- A downspout that has come away, or does not drain — outlet or blockage.
- Perforation in the base of a steel gutter — corrosion, and usually past repair.
The labour figure, and why it is missing
Every repair below is mostly labour, so it is worth being direct about what we cannot tell you before the parts prices make the job look cheaper than it is.
Cost data needed
Billed labour rate, per hour
We have not yet checked this figure against its source, so we are not publishing it.
What to do instead
- Ask each installer to itemise this line in a written quote, so you are comparing the same work rather than two totals. It is the figure we would want in front of us before agreeing to anything.
- See how we check a figure, and what has to be true before one appears here.
We would rather leave a gap here than publish a number we cannot stand behind.

Two publishers give an hourly billed rate. Neither states whether it is per worker or per crew, and gutter work is usually a two-person job — so a published rate could mean either one thing or twice that thing, and every total derived from it would inherit the doubt.
The useful finding is that this is not our problem to solve. The trade press itself advises homeowners to ask a contractor whether a quoted hourly rate is per crew or whether extra workers are charged on top. When the people publishing the rate tell readers to go and ask what it means, the ambiguity is a property of how the market quotes, not a hole in our reading. So ask that question when you get a repair quote. It is the single most useful thing on this page.
We also searched for published repair costs by symptom and did not find any we would stand behind. What is out there is largely automated cost-aggregator pages carrying figures that do not survive a sanity check — per-foot labour rates that work out to thousands of dollars for an afternoon’s work. None of it is used here.
Sagging and pulled-away sections
What has happened. Hangers have lost their grip, or the fascia they screw into has softened, or ice has loaded the run beyond what the spacing could carry. Weight is the usual trigger: a gutter full of wet debris is far heavier than a clear one.

The job. If the fascia is sound, rehanging a sagging run is the archetypal cheap repair: additional or replacement hangers, reset to the correct fall. Nothing is replaced but fasteners.
The catch. We cannot tell you how many hangers per foot, and that is not an oversight. Published spacings run from twelve inches in snow country to a “never exceed thirty-six inches” upper bound — a three-fold spread that is not a figure. What we can tell you is the direction: closer spacing where ice and wet debris loads are heavy, and if a run has sagged once at its existing spacing, the answer usually includes more hangers rather than the same number refitted.
When it is not cheap. If the screws turn without biting, the fascia has gone and you are reading the wrong section — see below.
Leaking joints and seams
What has happened. The sealant at a joint has reached the end of its life, or movement has broken the bond. This is normal wear rather than failure; sealant is a consumable.
The job. Clean back to bare metal, dry it properly, reseal. Cheap in parts and entirely dependent on preparation — a bead of sealant over damp debris fails within a season.
The pattern that matters. One leaking joint is maintenance. Several leaking joints along the same run is a sectional system reaching the end of its useful life, and the honest recommendation there is to price replacement rather than reseal each one in turn. A seamless run has no joints along its length to leak, which is the argument in seamless gutter cost.
Separated corners and mitres
What has happened. A corner is a manufactured piece joined to gutter on both sides, so it carries two joints and takes movement from two directions. Corners open before straight runs do.
The parts.
Corner mitres, each
$7.79–$62.15USD each (material)
The $7.79 floor is the aluminum K-style strip miter, which is the relevant piece for most jobs; the $62.15 ceiling covers larger sizes and other materials. For an aluminum 5in calculator the floor is the realistic figure. A typical job needs several: one per external and internal corner.

The spread is wide because it spans sizes, materials and finishes. For a standard aluminum K-style gutter the low end is the realistic figure; the ceiling covers larger sizes and other materials.
The job. Reseal if the piece itself is sound and merely unbonded. Replace the mitre if it is deformed or corroded. Either way it is a part and a short visit, unless the corner opened because the run either side has dropped — in which case it is a sagging problem wearing a corner problem’s clothes, and resealing it will not hold.
Fascia rot: the expensive one
What has happened. Water has been getting behind the gutter, usually because there is no gutter apron or drip edge, or because the gutter overflowed repeatedly for years. The board has softened, and the screws holding everything up are in wet timber.
We have no sourced figure for this, and we are not going to invent one. It is carpentry rather than gutter work: priced by the foot of board, by the difficulty of access, and by what is found behind it. It is also the one repair that can escalate, because rot travels into the rafter tails behind the fascia.
What to do about the uncertainty. Ask for a stated rate per linear foot of fascia replacement, written into the quote before work starts and contingent on what is found. A contractor who has already priced it cannot price it opportunistically once the gutter is down and you have no other options.
Why it changes the decision. If the fascia is going along a run, taking the gutter down is already necessary. At that point the marginal cost of new gutter instead of refitting the old is small, and how much to replace gutters is the relevant page. Fascia rot is the most common reason a repair job becomes a replacement job.
Lost fall and standing water
What has happened. The run no longer slopes to its outlets. Hangers have relaxed, or ice has pulled a section down, or it was hung wrong to begin with.
Why it matters more than it looks. Standing water accelerates corrosion in steel, adds weight that drops the run further, and holds the debris that starts the whole cycle again. It is a slow failure that ends in sagging.
The job. Rehanging to the correct fall. Parts are hangers; the cost is time and the skill of getting a consistent slope along a whole run. This is one of the repairs where a professional is worth more than the parts suggest.
Downspouts, outlets and blockages
What has happened. A downspout has come away from its brackets, an elbow has split, an outlet has blocked, or the discharge at the bottom is dumping water against the wall.

The job. Mostly refitting rather than replacement. The one to take seriously is a downspout discharging at the foundation, which is a drainage fault rather than a gutter fault and does real damage over time. Gutter downspouts covers sizing and discharge.
Before assuming it is broken: a gutter that overflows in heavy rain but not light rain, with nothing visibly blocked, usually has too few downspouts rather than a fault. The sourced spacing is one outlet per 20 to 25 feet of guttering, and under-provision is the most common design fault we see described.

The job. On a sectional system, swapping a length is straightforward. On a seamless run it is not — the run is one continuous piece, so a repair means cutting in a section and creating two joints where there were none, or reforming the whole run. That is a real argument for accepting a dent on a seamless gutter that still drains.
Steel that has perforated is generally past repair. Rust through the base means the zinc has gone over a wide area, and patching one hole tends to be followed by the next one.
Repair or replace
The decision rule, stated plainly:
Repair when the problem is one symptom in one place and the fascia is sound. Sagging sections, a leaking joint, a separated corner, a damaged length, a blocked outlet. The parts are cheap and the system has life left.
Replace when the fascia has gone along a run, when a sectional system is leaking at several joints at once, when a steel system is perforating in more than one place, or when the access is already being paid for because the roof is being done.
The one to think hardest about is repeated repairs on the same system. Three visits in two years costs more than the replacement would have, and the system is telling you something. How long gutters last covers why age is a poor guide to this and condition is a good one.
Common questions
How much does gutter repair cost?
Parts are inexpensive and sourced above. The labour is the bulk of any repair bill and we do not publish an hourly figure, because the two published rates we found do not say whether they are per worker or per crew — a difference of two times. Get three quotes, and ask each one that question directly.
Is it worth repairing gutters or should I replace them?
Repair, if the failure is localised and the fascia behind the gutter is sound. That covers most sagging, most leaks and most corner problems. Replace when the fascia has gone, when several joints are failing at once, or when steel has perforated in more than one place.
Can I repair a sagging gutter myself?
Rehanging a short run is within reach if you are confident on a ladder and can set a consistent fall. Two things make it a job for somebody else: a second storey, and screws that turn without biting, which means the fascia is soft and the real job is carpentry.
Why does my gutter overflow even though it is clean?
Usually too few downspouts, or a downspout too small for the roof area feeding it. The sourced spacing is one per 20 to 25 feet. It can also be lost fall, where water pools rather than running to the outlet.
Do gutter repair services charge a minimum call-out?
Most trades do, and it is why a single small repair often costs more than the parts suggest. We have no sourced figure for a gutter-specific minimum, so ask what it is when you book — and if you have several small faults, having them all done in one visit is usually much better value than one at a time.
Should I repair gutters before selling a house?
Visible sagging and staining on the fascia read as deferred maintenance to a buyer, and the repairs in this page’s cheap categories are inexpensive relative to how they show. Fascia rot is a different matter: it will be found in a survey whether or not the gutter in front of it looks tidy.
How we check our figures
Every parts price on this page traces to a named, dated source shown beside it. The labour rate, and published repair costs by symptom, are shown as gaps. In the labour case the reason is unusual and worth repeating: two publishers give an hourly figure and neither says whether it is per worker or per crew, and the trade press advises homeowners to ask contractors that same question. We record the ambiguity rather than resolving it by picking a reading.
Hanger spacing was given here as a direction rather than a number until 16 September 2026, when two manufacturer specifications closed it: 24 inches on centre in normal conditions, 18 inches where snow and wind are heavy, never more than 36 inches. The apparent three-fold spread in published figures turned out to be three different quantities — a recommendation, a reduced figure for snow, and a never-exceed ceiling — being quoted as though they were one. Fascia repair still carries no figure at all. Our full method, and the verification status of every value in the cost model, is on how we calculate costs.
