DIY Gutter Guards: What You Save and What You Risk

A do-it-yourself gutter guard kit costs $6 to $8 per linear foot in materials. The same job through a national brand averages $16 per linear foot installed (This Old House, June 2026). On a 140-foot house that is roughly $840 to $1,120 against $2,240 — a saving of $1,120 to $1,400, all of it labour.

Whether that is a good trade comes down to two things this page is about: which guard types you can actually fit yourself, and how many hours you are willing to spend on a ladder along every foot of your own gutter.

The width is stated on the listing, which is what makes this figure usable — micro-mesh is sold in several widths at different prices, so any quoted price without a width attached is not comparable to it.

That is one product from one trade supplier rather than a market rate, so do not read it as the trade price. But a DIY kit at $6 to $8 a foot sitting just above a trade material price of $5.80 tells you something useful: buying retail, you are paying roughly what the trade pays for the metal. The $16 installed figure is therefore about $8 to $10 a foot of labour, overhead, warranty and sales cost — our arithmetic on those published figures.

The comparison that would actually decide this

Most people are not choosing between doing it themselves and a national brand. They are choosing between doing it themselves and the local contractor who did their roof. That is the number we do not have.

We hold a figure for it and have not been able to confirm it against its source, so it is not published. That gap matters more here than almost anywhere else on this site, because a local contractor generally sits well below a national brand’s programme — so the real saving from doing it yourself is probably smaller than the $1,120-to-$1,400 above, possibly much smaller.

Get a local quote before deciding. If it comes in near the DIY material cost, the decision makes itself.

Which types you can realistically fit yourself

This is the part that decides feasibility, and it varies far more than the price does.

Foam inserts and brush guards are genuinely DIY. They drop into the trough. No fasteners, no roof contact, nothing to cut except to length. If you can get up the ladder safely, you can fit these. They are also the two types with the shortest useful life, which is a real trade rather than a hidden catch.

Screens and vinyl grids are usually DIY. Most clip over the front lip and tuck under the bottom course of shingles, or screw to the gutter’s front edge. The shingle-tuck method is where DIY installs go wrong: lifting a shingle course that has been down for fifteen years, in cold weather, breaks shingles.

Micro-mesh is DIY in kit form, and less forgiving. The kits are designed for homeowners and the fit tolerances are tighter, because the whole point of micro-mesh is that debris cannot get past the edge. A gap at a joint or a lifted end undoes it. Reverse-curve and surface-tension guards are not a DIY job. They work by water clinging to a curved nose, which means the angle they are set at is the product. Fitting them wrong does not produce a guard that works slightly less well; it produces one that throws water straight over the front in heavy rain. Several are sold only with installation for that reason.

The cost nobody puts in the comparison

Fitting guards yourself means being on a ladder along the entire length of your gutters, moving the ladder every few feet, working at the edge of a roof with your hands above your head.

Read the scope. Those are work-related falls, in 2011, among people who climb ladders professionally and are subject to workplace safety rules. A homeowner on a domestic ladder on a Saturday is not in that population.

The figure usually quoted on DIY safety pages — around half a million ladder injuries a year in the United States — is not in the CDC report those pages cite. That report is occupational and gives 34,000. We could not find a primary publication for the larger number, and the federal data that would cover homeowners is published through an interactive query tool rather than as a page, so we have left it empty rather than repeat a figure whose source we could not find.

What we will say without a number: the risk is not zero, it is concentrated in the exact activity this page is about, and it is the single input most likely to change the answer for a two-storey house.

There is a genuine irony worth naming. Gutter guards are sold as a way to stop climbing ladders. Fitting them yourself means one long, concentrated ladder session up front. What else you give up

Warranties, often. Many manufacturer guarantees on guard products are conditional on professional installation, and the long ones — the ones used in the sales pitch — almost always are. Read what the warranty actually covers before assuming the DIY kit carries it.

Fit certainty. Guards are sized for a profile. A kit for 5-inch K-style will not fit 6-inch, and neither fits half-round. Measure before ordering, and see gutter sizes if you are not sure what you have.

Your roof warranty, possibly. Any guard that tucks under the shingle course involves lifting roofing you did not install. Whether that affects a roof warranty depends on the warranty, and it is a question to ask your roofer before you start rather than after.

The condition check. A contractor fitting guards is looking at your gutters from three feet away along their whole length, and will usually tell you about a failing hanger or a rotten fascia board. Doing it yourself, you get that look only if you know what to look for — see gutter maintenance.

When DIY is clearly right, and clearly wrong

Clearly right: a single-storey house, firm level ground to foot a ladder on, a foam or brush guard or a simple screen, a run you can cover in an afternoon, and no interest in a twenty-year warranty you would have to fight over anyway.

Clearly wrong: a two-storey or steeply pitched house, a reverse-curve or surface-tension product, no recent ladder experience, or a long run that would take several sessions. The saving is fixed per foot; the risk is not.

Genuinely uncertain: everything between. Get the local quote first, because it is the one number that would resolve it and it is the one we cannot give you.

Are DIY gutter guards worse than professionally installed ones?

The product is not worse; some kits are the same product. What differs is fit, and fit is most of what makes a guard work. The gap is smallest on drop-in types and largest on anything that has to sit at a particular angle.

Do gutter guards still need cleaning if I fit them myself?

Should I fit guards at all?
